"Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" will be Sony Picture Animation's first stereoscopic 3-D digital release.

The company behind "Open Season" (which had a 3-D Imax film-based release) and "Surf's Up" has set a Jan. 15, 2010, release date.

"The story ia about 'food weather,' and so food falling from the sky lends itself so well to 3-D," said Bob Osher, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment's Digital Production division.

Sony Pictures Imageworks' animation and 3-D process ("Beowulf") will be used.

In release news, Sony Pictures Animation's "Hotel Transylvania" -- which had been slated for Sept. 25, 2009 -- has not announced a new release date.
