Michael Bay Talks Transformers 2 and 3 ... and 3D

ShoWest came to a close last night with their annual awards ceremony, where director Michael Bay was honored with the Vanguard Award for Excellence in Filmmaking. We'll skip the obvious jokes and cut right to the chase: During a press conference prior to the ceremony, Bay opened up about the current 3D boom by calling the technology "a gimmick" and later adding that he has no intentions of making Transformers 3 in 3D -- partly because he doesn't believe in 3D, and partly because his run-and-gun style of filmmaking is too constraining for 3D.

As far as whether he'll be directing a third Transformers film, Bay smirked and issued the standard "wait and see how the second one does" reply. Remember how Paramount jumped the gun and announced a summer 2011 release date for the third installment? Well, Bay reiterated his earlier claims that the studio made a mistake and was perhaps claiming that date so they had it locked in before deciding exactly what to put there. If a Transformers 3 does happen, look for it to hit theaters in 2012 instead. On Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Bay talked a bit about the IMAX portions of the film, as well as the final budget -- which came in four million under the planned $200 million, leaving some additional funds for extra effects work.
