More 3D Alternative Content Heading to Cinemas

SAWA Newsletter August 2009

BSkyB has linked with Odeon to provide 3D programming of Olympic gold
medalist Usain Bolt's 150m sprint in
Manchester, England last month (May). The event was filmed using a
combination of five 3D camera positions
(including three motorised stereo mirror rigs from UK 3D firm Inition,) as
well as two regular Sky HD cameras
for distribution in Odeon cinemas later in 2009.

Sky is fast accumulating a catalogue of 3D footage, ranging from sports,
such as the Ricky Hatton boxing match
presented for its first public demo in late 2008, and more recently general
entertainment and cultural events.
These include a performance of the UK National Ballet's Swan Lake as well as
facilitating the first live 3D
simulcast of music from rock band Keane on an HD 3DTV set, a public 3D
webcast (using lower quality anaglyph
glasses) and a live satellite feed to a digital 3D equipped Vue Cinema,
staged in partnership with Camera Corps
and Inition.

This comes as US firm Fugobi is preparing to film five selected Broadway
theatre performances in 3D for
international distribution in commercial cinemas by end 2010. Cinemas are
the only major current outlet for 3D
content with a small but growing installed base of around 4,000 screens
worldwide at March 2009. Sky is one
of several broadcasters experimenting with 3D programming. Longer term,
theatrical distribution could
continue to prove attractive, particularly while the installed base of 3D TV
displays is practically non-existent.
Cinemas are increasingly screening alternative content, but the enhanced
experience of 3D could well prove to
be the killer application for this genre. Nonetheless, the push towards 3D
in the home comes as a wide range of
industry bodies are first looking to introduce standards for the
interoperability of 3D for home viewing (see
2008/246a2).
