3D and Innovation from AAM

Digital technology enables 3D films to be shown from a single projector and server, with a vastly improved viewing experience over 35mm 3D

3D offers a unique experience over home entertainment

Many high profile directors (Lucas, Rodriguez, Cameron, Burton) are making or remaking their films in 3D, solely for digital exhibition, and Dreamworks have announced that from 2009, all their titles will be released in 3D.

Evidence to date from the first 4 3D titles shows that a 3D film takes approximately 3 times the revenue per screen, and double the number of tickets sold, as the 2D version of the same film. 2D screenings at a complex with a 3D screen also show increased average takings.

In November 2007, Paramount/Warner Bros. Beowulf became the largest 3D release ever, opening on over 1000 screens

Films to date:

Chicken Little (February 2006)

Monster House (August 2006)

Nightmare Before Christmas (October 2006)

Meet the Robinsons (March 2007)

Beowulf (November 2007)

Upcoming:

U2 3D - a 3D version of the band's Vertigo tour (January 2008)

Journey 3D - based on the Jules Verne story(August 2008)

Tintin - made by Peter Jackson & Steven Spielberg (2009)

Avatar - directed by James Cameron (2009)

Monsters vs Aliens (2009)

Shrek Goes Fourth (2010)

How To Train Your Dragon

Alice in Wonderland - directed by Tim Burton

The number of 3D screens is currently around 750 (the majority in the US). This number is predicted to rise to over 1000 by end of 2007, and over 3000 by 2009.
