Digital exhibitor Kino Cinemas, server manufacturer Doremi, software developer SiTec and consultancy peacefulfish have joined forces to launch a pilot project exploring and testing the added value of digital cinema services as a new source of cinema revenue. Starting in January 2008, the group will identify individual and packages of services that have the potential to enrich the cinema customers’ experience, bringing added value and increasing the attractiveness of the cinema visit. During the following five months the project centre will be mainly in Berlin with on-site activity in the UK. Additional locations for tests of the services can be considered. The project is based on the study “The Digital Cinema Experience” conducted by peacefulfish in cooperation with the Lapland Center of Expertise for the Experience Industry during 2007. In the context of that study cinema goers across different target groups and industry experts from a range of areas were interviewed on their view of the current cinema experience and, in case of the latter, their view of the current market situation and individual agenda. At the core of the study was the question how additional funds could be generated by the exhibitor to contribute to the investment into digital cinema technology. The results showed several areas with significant potential using not only digital cinema technology but also digital technology in general to lay a stronger focus on the customers’ experience and how to improve it.
