BRUSSELS -- European cinema chain Kinepolis has cleared theaters in each of its multiplexes to broadcast live opera in high definition from the New York Metropolitan Opera from October-May.

The opera season will be subtitled and kicks off Oct. 11 with Richard Strauss' "Salome," with Karita Mattila in the lead role. The Met operas are traditionally performed in the afternoon in New York, but with the time difference will be screened six hours later in Europe.

Kinepolis said the low cinema prices -- and the digital transmission -- means opera is now accessible to everyone.
